Born in East Germany, Manuela Höfer took her first
photograph at the age of fourteen. Working for the
local newspaper, she created a portfolio of
documentary images capturing 80's life in East
Germany, Poland, Russia, Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria.
In 1989, just months before the Berlin Wall was torn
down, Manuela was among the first to reach West Germany
via Hungary.
Her portfolio includes unique shots of the refugee camp
where she was interned in Budapest.
Following a two-year apprenticeship in Bavaria, she
studied photography at the FAMU Academy of Arts in
Prague. During this time, she produced several photographic series including
the St. Petersburg
project.
Manuela Höfer's distinctive style earned her the
Hasselblad Fine Art Award in 1995.
She currently lives and works in Berlin.
